Le sujet est difficile. Les émotions ressenties à lire ce qui est le premier roman d'Adam Silvera sont très fortes. Je n'étais jamais passé par autant de mouvements émotionnels en lisant quoique ce soit de toute ma vie et pourtant je suis un très grand lecteur. Silvera réussi le pari d'être brillant avec ce premier roman : brillant dans le choix du sujet, dans la forme de l'écriture, dans la concision de ce qu'il donne à voir. Sans doute à mes yeux le meilleur roman que j'ai lu en plus de 25 ans.

Il est déchirant!! J'ai tout aimé, l'histoire, les personnages, le style de l'auteur... La plume était très simple et pourtant tellement touchante!! C'est sûr que je lirai les autres livres du talentueux Adam Silvera! En tout cas préparez les mouchoirs car niveau émotion vous allez être servis!

Aaron Soto est un adolescent du Bronx, avec une bande de potes, une petite amie parfaite, et une mère qui a du mal à joindre les deux bouts mais qui ferait tout pour ses enfants. Le problème d'Aaron, c'est qu'il a aussi beaucoup de souvenirs difficiles à porter, comme le suicide de son père, qui lui font penser qu'il n'aura jamais droit à son "happy ending". Mais quand il rencontre Thomas, il commence à penser que peut-être, le bonheur est à portée de main, s'il se donne la peine de le trouver. Seulement, les choses ne vont pas toujours comme on espère qu'elles vont aller.Adam Silvera est un auteur dont j'ai toujours voulu lire les oeuvres et j'ai été plus qu'heureuse quand la Collection R a annoncé qu'elles seront traduites en français cette année ; hormis More Happy Than Not. J'ai donc été super contente de le recevoir en VO à mon anniversaire, de la part de mon amie wildlingreads, et malgré d'assez hautes attentes après tout le bien dont j'ai entendu parler, je n'ai absolument pas été déçue par cette lecture.Les personnages sont une bande d'ados typiques du Bronx, loin d'être le quartier le plus riche de New York, mais malgré la violence qui règne en arrière-plan, on apprend à connaître des personnes très humaines qui ne rêvent que d'un meilleur futur. Aaron était évidemment le plus attachant, sachant que le récit est écrit à la première personne et de son point de vue. On ressent facilement que l'auteur a mis une partie de lui-même dans son récit et ses personnages et cela ne les rend qu'encore plus réalistes et touchants, malgré la partie un peu "science-fiction" de cette superbe romance contemporaine.Adam Silvera est aussi connu pour avoir écrit chacun de ses trois livres parus à ce jour sur des personnages homosexuels ; et c'est toujours bon de voir plus de diversité dans la littérature Young Adult, d'autant plus qu'ici le sujet est très bien traité, loin des clichés, et de façon très réaliste, puisque l'auteur s'est lui aussi retrouvé dans des situations très similaires de celles d'Aaron. La partie "science-fiction" de l'histoire, par rapport à l'oubli de souvenirs douloureux, nous amène aussi à réfléchir à des sujets importants et un peu philosophiques qui sont très intéressants et touchent tout le monde.Le scénario était très bien mené, bien que le début soit légèrement lent : le décor est au moins très bien posé. Ca ne tarde tout de même pas à démarrer et action et révélations vont crescendo pour nous laisser avec un superbe final (qui m'a quand un peu laissé détruite, mais bon...).La plume de Silvera est très facile à lire, le niveau d'anglais reste tout à fait accessible pour ceux qui lisent ne serait-ce que de temps en temps en VO.Pour conclure, ce premier livre lu d'Adam Silvera (mais très certainement pas le dernier) est un véritable coup de coeur, qui aborde des sujets importants avec justesse, profondeur et en beauté, à travers un très bon scénario et des personnages réalistes et touchants. Je n'ai qu'encore plus hâte que History is all you left me et They both die at the end sortent en France!

There's plenty of bad stuff he wants to forget, but most of all, he wants to forget that he's... gay.His survival may depend on it.This book will break your heart into a million pieces as it demonstrates some of the horrid ramifications of homophobia and hatred. An author can bestow no greater gift upon his readers than to expand their sensibilities and evoke true empathy within them for people whose lives are different from their own, and this author delivers admirably.Aaron's voice is raw and believable, as is the depiction of impoverished life in the projects, but it's his story that makes the greatest impression. A teenager's search for acceptance and love is a common literary theme, but few authors have nailed it so memorably. This may be considered a YA book, but I recommend it to anyone of any age. After all, understanding and empathy have no age limit.

In turns dark and captivating, simple and joyous, "More Happy Than Not" is a seat on the rickety near-future fire escape inside the mind of 16-year-old Aaron Soto.We navigate his world with him, a friendly kid who loves fiercely, thinks hard, and fights when he needs to. He and his fellow kids have grown up tough, in a place where the difference between poor and not-so-poor is having a real bed to sleep on, alone.Although one might go so far as to call this science fiction, I'd be more comfortable calling it a parable on the nature of our changing world, a la Black Mirror, although it avoids the somber darkness of that show and occasionally gives us a glimpse of the bright sunshine of a teenager's world when everything is going right, select things can be taken for granted, and nothing matters beyond the present.This is truly a special book. I would recommend it to anyone, but especially to teens wondering about their place in the world, or their parents.

He is still dealing with the fall out from his father’s suicide and his own suicide attempt that followed it. Things in the neighborhood are changing and it is hard to know where to fit himself in the changing landscape. With his girlfriend, Genevieve, away at art camp for the summer, he might have found himself slipping back into old patterns of unhappiness, but he meets Thomas, who quickly becomes his new best friend, and possibly the answer to where he belongs. That is until Aaron starts to realize there is a side of himself that will make it impossible for him to be truly happy, and he decides he is willing to do anything to scrub that part of him out, even if it means changing who he is.This is one of those stories where the author tries to make you believe that they are going to tell you one kind of story, and then half-way through you realize they have been telling a totally different kind of story. Of course, if you are used to the device at all, you can tell what is happening before the reveal, but it is still rewarding when it delivers.And this book has a hell of a one-two gut punch.Adam Silvera’s near-future rendering of the race, class, and sexual-identity politics of this Bronx neighborhood is a perfect canvas for Aaron Soto’s voyage of heart rending mistakes and consequences. It is one of those books that stays with you for a while, sitting on your chest and weighing on your mind. Do you remember the way you felt the first time you read the last page of Flowers for Algernon? I mean that was probably at least 22 years ago in my case, but I still remember that feeling, and it was the same feeling when I finished this book. (Seriously, I just assume, as a matter of course, that everyone has read and been deeply affected by Flowers for Algernon. If not… spoiler alert: it’s kind of a bummer.)Aaron is a fascinating character, because he is confused, depressed, and angry, like so many teenagers are… but he is also a pot whose contents have settled to the bottom and Silvera, with a careful hand, is slowly stirring those things back up to the surface, revealing them, not just to the reader, but to Aaron as well.It is a powerful debut novel.And, if you can’t tell, I recommend it. I recommend it to Sci-fi fans, because the Leteo plot line is so delicately woven in. I recommend it to Young Adult Fiction fans, because I think it makes an important addition to this genre, particularly in the growing collection of coming out stories now becoming available. I recommend it to introspective fiction fans, who like to be made to think about things long after they finish them… because if you are like me… you will. I think you should read this book.Okay, ready at last to throw this book onto my Pride-Book-Review-Project Scales.On the first scale, my Queer Counterculture Visibility Scale, which I invented to quantify how much a book shed light onto less visible parts of the community, I really think this book does well. This book is about intersecting identities, no doubt. Characters are dealing with the cross section of race, class, and sexuality and facing the limitations of community and family when you find that you don’t fit the exact mold of the social group that has always insulated and supported you from the rest of the world. It is also a book that deals head on with depression and the complicated nature of grief. Easily:4 out of 5 starsOn the second scale, The Genre Expectation Scale, this book also does well. I really like the way Adam Silvera used some classic sci-fi devices to explore themes of identity. And, especially, for a debut novel, I think he had a steady hand in how and when he revealed the machinations of his story. It is a solid Young Adult story and I think it delivered what he offered and then some.4.5 out of 5 stars

4.5 Stars!Adam Silvera is a brilliant storyteller. I loved the way he set up the story in More Happy Than Not. It was creative and not what I was expecting at all. There were twists I never saw coming.Not only was the way the story unfolded different and interesting, so were the characters. Adam Silvera took the main character, Aaron, who could have been very frustrating and annoying to readers and made him relatable. Aaron complained a lot about his life and his level of happiness, but he did it in a way that had me empathizing with him, not being irritated by him. I wanted him to achieve his ultimate happy ending. I was rooting for him the entire time.The other characters in the book were whipped cream on top of the Aaron sundae. I loved Thomas’ maturity and Genevieve’s never ending support of Aaron. His mom and brother always wanted what was best for him and had his back. I have to admit my favorite character was Me-Crazy, even if he was a horrible person. The fact that he gave himself that name was perfect, and most of the time he had me laughing.The only thing missing for me in More Happy Than Not was more information about what came next for Aaron. I needed an epilogue or something. I’m dying to know more.More Happy Than Not is a book I'll be thinking about for a long time to come. It's definitely one I would recommend.
